The Man Who Fell to Earth

Fülszöveg

The Man Who Fell to Earth by Walter Tevis is a poignant and melancholic sci-fi masterpiece that uses the trope of an alien visitation to explore deeply human themes of loneliness, addiction, and existential despair. The story follows Thomas Jerome Newton, a humanoid alien from the dying planet Anthea, who arrives on Earth in a desperate bid to build a rescue spaceship for the last survivors of his race. Harnessing his world’s superior technology, he quickly amasses a vast fortune, but his mission is ultimately derailed as he falls victim to the overwhelming isolation of the human condition and sinks into crippling alcoholism. Written in spare, evocative prose, Tevis’s 1963 novel stands as a brilliant critique of modern consumerism and a hauntingly beautiful character study of an outsider destroyed by the very world he tried to save.
